    December 05

    I am now published

In the Medicine Hat News ; November 19, 2008 National Day of Remebrance for Road Crash Victims.

On November 5th, my husband's parents needed to get from Kimberley BC to Cranbrook and as they are elderly, choosing not to drive any longer for the sake of safety, they took a taxi.  They shared the costs with a third gentleman who made regular trips for dialysis.

A truck driver through distraction or poor choice, failed to stop at a the stop sign as he crossed Highway 95.

Roy has a cracked pelvis in 2 places, and a cracked hip. He is being moved from ICU today. Medications he needed for pain relief adversely affected a pre-existing condition. He is in great pain.

The other gentleman, Colin, has been moved to Trail BC to care for the need for dialysis and repair his leg broken in three places.

The driver of the taxi, has nothing broken but cannot work as yet due to other soft tissue injuries.

Pam was flown to the Foothills ICU with injuries of 3 cracked cervical vertebra, a broken sternum and multiple broken ribs both sides and a partially collapsed lung. There is also a gash to the liver. These are life threatening injuries and fog delayed her transfer to Calgary. She has had to make a difficult decision. She had to give the doctors permission to perform all life saving measures except CPR.

I am no longer angry at the driver as I have come to some acceptance of this situation. Here is what continues to make me angry as I drive in our own 'nice' city:

I am angry at people who don't have time to stop at a stop sign. If you have to drive on Ross Glen Drive make sure you are ready to avoid drivers coming at you from Rice Ave and Robinson.

I am angry at people who feel that out-of-towners cause our problem. These shoppers and visitors are guests here. Give them some time and space to safely arrive at their destination. Wouldn't you appreciate that in an unfamiliar area? You wouldn't have access to all the shops here if there wasn't the extended marketplace.

I am angry at driver's who cannot behave in a construction zone, yet complain about the condition of the roads.

I am angry at driver's who don't look both ways at intersections...some people still walk.

I am angry at people who don't signal or shoulder check. How egotistical and rude not to let others know your intentions and cutting people off..

I am angry at people who tailgate trying to intimidate you to go faster. Push, push, push.   I have learned to go even slower so that when the accident occurs, it will be at a lower speed, causing less harm to me and my family.

I am angry at those who speed. Your late. It feels good to hear the motor pull.  It feels like you're doing something. You get angry at all the 'slow' people doing the speed limit blocking your personal path. Really? You can create time with speed?  You need to do some math here because all you make is momentum and a bigger accident.

I am angry at those who rely on drugs and alcohol to get through life and then get in a vehicle. Plan how you are going to get home before you even go out. If you take your own car, you are going to want to bring it home. So don't do that. Take a cab or have a designated driver. If you kill or maim yourself that's your own concern and might even work out better for the rest of us.. But you drunken buggers, get on the road and you don't care who you kill or harm. It is the leading criminal cause of death in Canada. Proud of yourself?

I am angry at those who think they are 'kind' and let medicated or elderly drivers keep their license.

I am angry at parents who are tired of driving their teens around, buy them a car but don't include the lessons.

I am angry that people do not budget for winter tires and maintenance but feel entitled to use their vehicle anyway.

I am angry at people driving aggressive vehicles aggressively unaware that they come to a stop they same way others do.  You need reaction time. You need braking time.and you slide on ice.

I am angry at people who intend to drive distracted with make-up, hair, cell phones, reading material, CD changes and food to go.

I am angry that people are so sorry when they have caused an accident. How come they couldn't think of that before?

I am angry at the people who cause so much damage to individuals and property yet complain about the wait in emergency and the costs of insurance.

I am angry that charges against a dangerous driver causing this much pain and damage are ridiculously inadequate and act as no deterrent to others. The RCMP on the scene wanted criminal charges laid and they got a Traffic Infraction.

I am angry in a small city of 60 000 we have 60 to 100 accidents a week and yet I am told this is a nice place to live.

I am angry at idiots on the road. Keep your vehicle safely away from other vehicles. Why is that so hard? You'll drive properly after an accident.Won't you? and you'll be so sorry.

Have a very Merry Christmas...and make sure your driving doesn't cause this much damage and pain.

An update: Roy was able to walk around his hospital bed just the other day. Pam has the Traheotomy tube out
but still not allowed a cup of tea until she has healed a little more. The accident was exactly 1 month ago today.

    August 16

    We've had a holiday!

I almost hate to put this under travel as we did not travel far nor to exotic places.  I just always believe that there are those people who come here from other countries to enjoy what we have. So we stay rather close to home and check out all that stuff.

So it was a small holiday - not so much for Garry though as he did most of the driving but we went up to Rosebud to take in the Dinner Theatre:  Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat (to die for) the coat was a gorgeous full length with the bottom on a bias so that it would flare into a full circle when he turned.  The cast would hold it out and he would spin all the while singing - just fabulous.  There was a sun on one shoulder, a dove on the other, the back and below the waist became a map of the world .  The hem was decorated with appliqued children all holding hands.  The lining was gold satin.  It weighed so much I don't know how he managed.  The stage was all about books.  The window shapes, the beds etc as this was told as a Good Night Story.  Some of the songs are still getting stuck in our heads.  We stayed at the Rosebud Country Inn. No phone. No TV. Just a beautiful view and gorgeous feather beds and lavender oatmeal soap.  There was also a second stage and a smaller one act comedy we took in called "The Proposal" It was such physical humor I think  only certain people would be capable of putting that on... It's by Anton Chekov.  And the Rosbud Cafe is worth the trip for pizza.   The kind where the chef tosses the homemade crust in the air.  He was also the folk singer but he was too busy to play for us that night. Too busy making the pizza.

Rosebud is a small town near Drumheller, AB and it is a college town devoted to the stage.  About 14 students start each year and they are required to live and work in Rosebud.  The Mercantile is where the luncheon /dinner is served prior to the play.  Some of the waiters and entertainers there were also then seen as the actors and then later walking around town with friends.  There are craft shops, a general store and a museum and an historic walk.

The next day went to see friends who moved out to Nokomis SK (Population 433)  and stayed in the hotel above the bar because they were renovating the historic site (Old CIBC) that they had bought to live in...We had a TV but No phone and No alarm clock and no shampoo.  Nice Towels though. Felt bad having a shower there though as the tiles were coming off the wall  : )  A steal at $40.00 a night. There was a live entertainer in the pub so Garry and I went and had a drink after the kids were tucked in.  Maria Danver from Fox Valley SK.  What a gem! She looked like a baby I didn't think she was old enough to be in the bar but could she sing! A female Roy Orbison. We went into Manitou a salt water lake but it had gotten choppy so we couldn't float.  Then dinner and dance at Danceland. http://watrous-sask.com/dance.htm  I think will get you to the site. The kids were bored to tears. The band was a Big Band group called the Soft Tones  It was like walking back into the 1920's or 30's. Apparently they get some good entertainment there as when they did the Ed Sullivan Review. It just wasn't our night. So much history in that area.

The day we left was the day of the fair. There was a parade - I kinda missed that because I went to get a coffee and when I got back it was over except for the little pony and his wagon. So we played with him. We had a pancake breakfast, took in the baking, craft, and grain competitions but had to get on the road. Almost did not get out of town.  Apparently Nokomis shuts down between noon and 1:00 for lunch and we needed gas. Rahn's was still open but the Co-op had already closed. Just two choices.  On the way home we tried to see the The Tunnels at Moose Jaw but they were booked up so late that we decided to come home and make that a separate trip out to the Temple Spa and see all that on another journey.  We did see a mining of salt from one of the lakes in the area - it was all an ocean bed eons ago - it looked just like winter for miles but it was salt piled at the side of the highway.

So after one day at home I came down with the most wretched cold and suffered horribly since.  Even had trouble breathing. Doctor gave me an EKG. I get so angry when these things are normal.  No...I hurt. That is not normal. It was determined I have a virus with chest wall pain.  Psst.  They don't know what's wrong.

Bob the Cat was not well either.  He must have eaten a few too many mice this summer and had a huge hairball.  He threw up (Really? How interesting!) but he did not go poo for about a week.  Sometimes the hairball will calcify and if kitty  cannot get rid of it then there is an operation involved. I am pleased to report Bob had the $400.00 dump today!  No one else seems to be as excited about this as I am.  Not even Bob.

Calli clean for 34 days!!  Catherine taking Level 6 Swim badge.  School starts here on August 30th.  Got the new shoes.  Such a rite of passage.

We have a column in our Newspaper (my Mastercard Bill has more pages) this colmun is called Ticked Off/Tickled Pink.  People can phone  in annonymously and complain or compliment.  The complaints do have the bulk of the column but some very nice things are said as well. A local theatre group did a spoof of some of the entries.  I still remember this very beautiful, sort of big sexy beautiful girl become a cat going to the bathroom in someone's garden. She had such a lovely pleased look on her face.  There was another lady annoyed at the person who passed gas in the grocery store and many more. Now we no longer just flip another driver the bird as we want to make sure that our message is received therefore we were instructed to honk the horn twice and then flip. "Honk! Honk! Flip."   Anyway this is another item from the Ticked Off/Tickled Pink column:

I am ticked off that I got a photo radar ticket.  Why are the police targeting ordinary citizens?  Where are the police when people are speeding ?

    I kid you not.
